Joe Hassien was the son of Hussine and Turkmen Naji from
Rachaya
,
Lebanon
. He came to the
United States
at the age of 14 to go to school. He
ended up in
Bevier
,
Missouri
where he volunteered for service in WWI. Serving
overseas in
France
, he was awarded a citation and medal, and in
Germany
. After returning from service, he
operated a grocery stores in Moberly,
Jacksonville
and then
Vandalia
,
Missouri
.
He married a local girl and raised 4 sons in the grocery business.
“Mr. Joe”, as he was called, was well known for his benevolent
characteristics, having provided food, clothing and other material needs for
many during the depression years. Joe
Hassien was devoted to his country and often expressed his appreciation of the
American Flag, calling it the ‘prettiest flag” in the best country in the
whole world.
Private First Class Hassien died in 1971.
He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rites, American
Legion, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
